  • If you choose a holiday farmhouse for your vacation near Grosseto, you can't skipped a visit to the wonderful medieval town of Pitigliano. Pitigliano is a little gem, built on a tuff rock steep, displaying a magical landscape which is one of the most photographed in Europe. The town shows historical records tracking back to all the different historical eras since pre-history: the Etruscan civilization, the Roman civilization, the Aldobrandeschi period (Aldobrandeschi family reigned over Maremma for nearly five centuries), the magnificent Renaissance period ruled by the Orsini family and the final Medici and Lorena dominations. One the principal monuments in Grosseto is the Orsini palace, which hosts an Etruscan Museum with interesting findings from the archeological site of Statonia.

A farmhouse near Grosseto is a perfect accomodation, for a nice weekend of wine tasting and discovering. Lots of factors contribute to the final results in the complex process which is "wine making": sun and wind exposure, soils, the proximity of mountains or sea coasts. Maremma offers a great variety of these factors and from this variety stems the vast range of Maremma wines: Vermentino, Ansonica, Morellino, Malvasia, Ciliegiolo, Meatico and many other traditional and modern wines. But the most important factor is indeed "tradition": the culture of winemaking traces back to the origins of civilization in this area and it's established as a shared common knowledge among all the farmers in the Grosseto area.

Spending your holiday in a Grosseto farmhouse offers a lucky chance to visit the wild and picturesque Maremma. Grosseto is actually the ancient capital of Maremma, the southern area of Tuscany, bordering on Latium. The region was considered "unhealthy" in the previous centuries because of its humid areas. During the XVIIIth century, thanks to Duke Leopoldo II Lorena, the marshes disappeared because Maremma was widely drained , but it still bears a wild and magnetic appeal, all of its own. That's why Maremma is now a favourite destination for tourists from all the world, heading to one of the many farmhouses located in the Grosseto area.

High gastronomy and good wines are synonim of hospitality in any farmhouse in Grosseto. We can especially point out the Val d'Orcia area as a territory where culinary arts have stayed especially loyal to the tradition: the local food tradition is indeed a wholesome and tasty one. In this well reknowned area in the province of Grosseto the main food courses are rustic dishes, made with simple, but high quality produce coming from the local countryside. Probably the most famous one is the classical fiorentina steak, a large steak, brushed with olive oil and aromatic herbs, and cooked on the grill over chestnut wood.
