  • If you're staying in a farmhouse in Grosseto, you'll have the chance to discover a young and brilliant town, only a few kilometres away from the coast and the Thyrrhenian Sea. The center of the town is its most ancient part, a walled medieval pearl which has been the heart othe town for centuries, while the modern town has been branching out outside the imposing brick walls. The most characteristic monument in Grosseto is the main cathedral, the "Duomo", a rare example of a rose-and-white-striped facade. Grosseto cathedral hosts interesting works by Tuscan painters and sculptors such as Andrea della Robbia and Matteo di Giovanni.

A farmhouse holiday in Tuscany, near Grosseto, is the best way to discover all the traditions of Maremma. Among the local events, takes a special place the ancient ceremony of "la Merca", the livestock branding. La Merca is performed as a sort of rural festivity during spring (traditionally on the 1st of May) in Alberese, a site inside the natural park Parco dell'Uccellina. If you want to book a holiday in a farmhouse in Grosseto for enjoying the country life of the region, we suggest to choose the middle August period: on the 15th of August (Ferragosto festivity) the local cattle shepherd, the Butteri, play rodeos even better than American cow boys!

Today it's quite common to spend a holiday or a weekend in a farmhouse in Grosseto. But few people know that this is possible thanks to the great drainage ordered by Leopoldo II, Duke of Tuscany, in the XVIII century. Maremma was at the time particularly humid, marshes occupied a large part of the region and this situation favoured the diffusion of malaria infections (malaria is actually an Italian word meaning "bad air"). Drainage transformed Grosseto and its region into the romantic and magnificent country that everybody can admire today, preserving in any case the wild and mysterious fascination of Maremma.

High gastronomy and good wines are synonim of hospitality in any farmhouse in Grosseto. We can especially point out the Val d'Orcia area as a territory where culinary arts have stayed especially loyal to the tradition: the local food tradition is indeed a wholesome and tasty one. In this well reknowned area in the province of Grosseto the main food courses are rustic dishes, made with simple, but high quality produce coming from the local countryside. Probably the most famous one is the classical fiorentina steak, a large steak, brushed with olive oil and aromatic herbs, and cooked on the grill over chestnut wood.
