High gastronomy and good wines are synonim of hospitality in any farmhouse in Grosseto. We can especially point out the Val d'Orcia area as a territory where culinary arts have stayed especially loyal to the tradition: the local food tradition is indeed a wholesome and tasty one. In this well reknowned area in the province of Grosseto the main food courses are rustic dishes, made with simple, but high quality produce coming from the local countryside. Probably the most famous one is the classical fiorentina steak, a large steak, brushed with olive oil and aromatic herbs, and cooked on the grill over chestnut wood.
If you're staying in a farmhouse in Grosseto, you'll have the chance to discover a young and brilliant town, only a few kilometres away from the coast and the Thyrrhenian Sea. The center of the town is its most ancient part, a walled medieval pearl which has been the heart othe town for centuries, while the modern town has been branching out outside the imposing brick walls. The most characteristic monument in Grosseto is the main cathedral, the "Duomo", a rare example of a rose-and-white-striped facade. Grosseto cathedral hosts interesting works by Tuscan painters and sculptors such as Andrea della Robbia and Matteo di Giovanni.
For the ones who prefer a sea holiday, a farmhouse near Grosseto is a good starting point. Grosseto is only a few kilometres from the sea and from the many sea centres along the Thyrhennian coast. For instance, Castiglione della Pescaia, once a little fishers village of Etruscan origin, is now a well renowned seaside resort along the coast of Maremma, where sand beaches blends into a thick pine wood. The heart of this picturesque center is a romantic medieval area, surrounded by walls and towers and domnated by the Aragonese Castle (XIVth century). Lots of restaurants and holiday farmhouses offer fish and traditional food of the Maremma region, accompanied by the best Tuscany wines.
A farmhouse holiday in Grosseto means enjoying fully the culinary tradition of Tuscany Maremma. The range of typical food produce and dishes is huge, but we can suggest a special treat, once reserved to the noble class of the region, despite its name: the fisherman fettuccine ("fettuccine del pescatore"). The main ingredients are scampi, oysters, arugula, salt, pepper, garlic and extra-virgin olive oil: a festival for seafood lovers! If you prefer more "earthy" flavours, you can ask your farmhouse's landlord in Grosseto: fragrant wild mushrooms are widely common in the Maremma country and they are the basic ingredient for a homemade mushroom soup, best accompanied by garlic bread and parmigiano reggiano.
