  • Today it's quite common to spend a holiday or a weekend in a farmhouse in Grosseto. But few people know that this is possible thanks to the great drainage ordered by Leopoldo II, Duke of Tuscany, in the XVIII century. Maremma was at the time particularly humid, marshes occupied a large part of the region and this situation favoured the diffusion of malaria infections (malaria is actually an Italian word meaning "bad air"). Drainage transformed Grosseto and its region into the romantic and magnificent country that everybody can admire today, preserving in any case the wild and mysterious fascination of Maremma.

A farmhouse holiday near Grosseto is a nice opportunity to discover and live some old rural traditions, connected to ancient rites of fertility. One of them is celebrated every year, during the month of May and it's called "La Maggiolata". It's a sort of festival of flowers celebrating the beginning of summer, where the country people of Lucignano create parade carts adorned with thousands of flowers and drive them in a long parade through the streets of the little medieval center. During the two-week festivity, Lucignano is animated by several musica bands performing at every corner and in every street. Any farmhouse near Grosseto can offer information about local festivities and renactments. Just ask your landlord!

Chosing a holiday farmhouse near Grosseto, especially near the seaside resort of Marina di Grosseto, is a perfect opportunity of enjoying all the beauties and the touristic resources of this famous seaside location: the long sand beaches with their characteristic little dunes and the typical Maremma pine woods. A farm holiday near Marina di Grosseto doesn't mean a sea-only vacation for the tourist. The town borders a notable natural park (Parco Naturale dell'Uccellina) and many touristic attractions are just a few kilometres away: the medieval towns of Sovana, Sorano, Pitigliano, built on tuff rock, the famous thermal center of Saturnia and Montalcino, home of the worldwide famed "Brunello di Montalcino" wine.

A farmhouse holiday in Grosseto becomes for most people a lifelasting good memory. Maremma sightings are unique and covey a sort of magnetic and wild appeal. That's even more evident in the area of Cape Argentario, along the southern coast of Tuscany. In ancient times Cape Argentario was a little island in front of the Tuscan coast, but the debris transported by the rivers to the sea connected the island to the continent and created the famous laguna of Orbetello, a well renowned naturalistic oasis. Other main towns along the coast are Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole.
