The center of the town is its most ancient part, a walled medieval pearl which has been the heart othe town for centuries, while the modern town has been branching out outside the imposing brick walls. The most characteristic monument in Grosseto is the main cathedral, the "Duomo", a rare example of a rose-and-white-striped facade. Grosseto is actually the ancient capital of Maremma, the southern area of Tuscany, bordering on Latium. The region was considered "unhealthy" in the previous centuries because of its humid areas. During the XVIIIth century, thanks to Duke Leopoldo II Lorena, the marshes disappeared because Maremma was widely drained , but it still bears a wild and magnetic appeal, all of its own.
